Badr Ethiopia (International Ethiopian Muslims organization) condemns Saudi government’s ill-fated treatment of Ethiopian citizens in that country. Ethiopians who are well known for their hospitality and compassion have provided a refuge to safeguard and shelter the companions of the prophet (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during their persecution at the hands of the Qureish 1400 years ago. Those Ethiopians living in Saudi Arabia do not deserve this kind of severe and inhuman treatment by Saudi authorities. No matter their lot in the society, these innocent human beings deserve dignity and justice in the country where liberation of the citizens was enabled by the advent of Islam.  The religion of Islam requires dignified handling of cases and equal treatment under the law. We believe that mass arrests and human rights abuses of Ethiopians living in Saudi Arabia should not be perpetrated because of the mistakes of a few unscrupulous individuals who otherwise should be held accountable under the rule of law.

In this regard, we urge the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, to intervene in the continuing harassment and discrimination of Ethiopians. In the meantime, we call upon the Ethiopian government to uphold its responsibility toward its citizens and provide for them all the protections necessary using its diplomatic leverage. This scene will not bode well for Ethiopia or Saudi Arabia if immediate halt to this type of denigration is not implemented.

We extend our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones and pray for those who are injured or affected as result of this injustice. Badr will do its outmost to redress the grievances and unacceptable violations of human dignity and human rights of the Ethiopians at the highest level of governments internationally.

Finally, we would like to remind all Ethiopians to show their solidarity and support to our brothers and sisters whose lives have been altered dramatically by the aggressive and arbitrary actions of the Saudi authorities. May Allah Subhanahu Wotaa-Aalaa convey His mercy and comfort upon all those who have been affected by these unwarranted acts.
